Royal navy victorian dress epaulettes in named transporation tin, circa 1880s, with gold bullioned tassels and queen’s crown buttons, retailer named ’e. walton / gosport’, complete with hinged clips and contained in their original japanned and felt lined transportation tin complete with dividers. brass plate to lid engraved ‘lieut. l.e. thraherne / r.n.’ plus the remains of a paper london, chatham and dover railway transportation label applied over a similarly worn insurance label indicating an insurance value of £10. lieutenant commander llewellyn edmund traherne (14 september 1863 – 14 october 1914) joined hms britannia in january 1877 leaving december 1878 having taken first prize in seamanship that year. appointed to hms charybdis, then served in many stations and qualified in gunnery, gaining 1st class certificate in 1890 and retiring in 1897. on the outbreak of the great war, he re-joined as lt commander emergency list. promoted to acting commander of the excellent on 12 october 1914 and died of pneumonia two days later at the royal naval hospital, hasslar, whilst on active service.
