United states model 1840 cavalry sword by friedrich horster of solingen, circa 1860s, with 36 in. single-edged slightly curved blade fullered on each side. ricasso stamped ‘f.h’ for friedrich horster, brass pommel and three-barred guard, wire-bound leather on wood grip, grip worn with losses to the leather and wire binding, no scabbard, 42, in. overall, many of these swords were imported from prussia by the union during the civil war.
