Revolver, a scarce Colt 3rd Model Dragoon SN:12240 the 3rd Model in the "Four Pounder" Colt series of large man stoppers. The 3rd pattern was manufactured from 1851 to 1861 with a total of approx 10,500. Virtually all would see service in the "Old West" and American Civil War. Calibre .44 with a 7.5" part round, part octagonal barrel. Serial numbers start at 10200 (some overlap with 2nd Model) and finishing in 1861 at 19600. Barrel Address "Saml Colt New York" (City) removed by the insertion of a fixed non standard rear V sight. This revolver has matching numbers including barrel wedge. The roll engraved Texas Ranger (Indian fight scene has worn off). This revolver has had an extended life, between 1865 and 1870 the cap channel has been deepened to accept a .44 rimfire cartridge. The cylinder has been modified by the insertion of a 9mm solid collar and the top of the hammer modified to fire a rimfire cartridge. The cylinder length is maintained at 55mm by the rimfire conversion ring being the same size as the nipple section (removed to accommodate the cartridge). This early conversion is defined as a "private Conversion". Most conversions in this category are non factory conversions and it is possible that this piece is a one off.
