Carbine: an extremely rare and interesting Boer War Lee Enfield Cavalry Carbine, cal .303. Butt strap marked Crown over "V.R." and "Enfield 1897" then "L.E.C." (Lee Enfield Carbine) and "1" (1st class arm), SN: 4677 (all matching). Flattened bolt handle, magazine cut off, correct magazine with loop retainer. Fine walnut stock, butt stock with Enfield store keepers stamp and "1". Original butt marker disc stamped "XVII" (17th Lancers) and "92" (Rifle number). The butt strap also carries the mark '00 which shows it was inspected and passed for service when they went to S.Africa in 1900. It is possible this rifle was used in the famous stand of the 17th Lancers at Modderfontain on 17/9/1901 where Smut's Commandos ambushed "C" Squadron, and although out numbered the squadron refused to surrender, immortalised in the painting "All that was left of them", by Caton Woodville. Deactivated with current certificate. Collector Grade piece
