Roman Republican silver Denarius of M. Sergius Silus 116-115 BC. Head of Roma r., monogram mark of value behind bust. / Horseman galloping left with severed head in hand. 3.84g. Crawford 286/1. GVF/VF with some pitting. The reverse depicts the moneyer's grandfather of the same name, who was a legendary warrior. Wounded 23 times, captured twice by the Carthaginians, escaping both times in chains. Lost his right arm fighting the Celts in 218 BC and had it replaced with one made of iron.
