Carbine: a rare and interesting Imperial German M1888 Mauser Carbine, 7.92mm Cal. Barrel 18". Breech marked 'Mauser', and action with "GEW88 7.92mm". The carbine has an interesting steel plaque screwed to the buttstock containing the following info "B.Carter HMS Philomel. Captured Persian Gulf 22.10.11". Research reveals that on the 22nd October 1911 HMS Philomel was engaged in capturing an Arab Dhow which was engaged in gun running in the Persian Gulf. In this action 300 rifles, 51 pistols and 138,571 rounds of ammo were captured. B J Carter M3071 is shown on the medal roll. Born on 14/2/91 and was from Winchester. Rank Plumbers Mate.
