Norman silver Penny of William I the Conqueror 1066-1087 (probably William II Rufus 1087-1100) PAXS type (peace i.e. the King's Peace, associated with coronations). Obverse: Bust facing, crowned and diademed, to right a sceptre, '+PILLELM REX'. / Reverse: Large cross pattée, in each angle an annulet containing one leter of the word PAXS, '+PVLFRIC ?N SVÐ' - Sudbury (Suffolk) Mint, moneyer Wulfric. 1.31g. Although the mint signature has a thorn in the 'D' i.e. 'TH', it is known that this moneyer worked at Sudbury and not Southwark, as the British Museum's Norman Coins Vol. II 1916 lists a coin as reading 'PVLFRIC ON SVÐBI', p.239, No. 150. Sold with a a ticket in the hand of Lloyd Bennett. A very rare mint, full, round, well-centred; a little weak spot in legend each side, GVF
